متن کاملNon-scalable locks are dangerous
Several operating systems rely on non-scalable spin locks for serialization. For example, the Linux kernel uses ticket spin locks, even though scalable locks have better theoretical properties. Using Linux on a 48-core machine, this paper shows that non-scalable locks can cause dramatic collapse in the performance of real workloads, even for very short critical sections. The nature and sudden o...
متن کاملLinux Scalability — from the micro to the HUGE
Linux is possibly the most scalable operating system ever. From the Linux Watch to the 1024 and more processor ALTIX machines from SGI; one kernel runs on them all. The kinds of challenges that are presented by the very small are in some way related to the challenges of the very large, but for different reasons. For example, memory footprint is very important for both: on small systems you just...
متن کاملEnhancing File Security by Integrating Steganography Technique in Linux Kernel
In today‟s world securing file data is very important. The proposed Secure File System (SFS) provides file data security using steganographic techniques in a transparent and convenient way. The proposed SFS pushes information hiding services into the Linux kernel space, mounting it between the Virtual File System layer and underlying file system. After SFS is integrated with the Linux operating...
متن کاملBear – A Resilient Operating System for Scalable Multi-processors
This paper describes a minimalist operating system design aimed at scalable multiprocessor systems whose primary goal is resilience. The design is expressly targeted toward critical military applications for the purpose of operating through failures, errors, and malicious attacks. Lessons learned from several key proof-of-concept components, implemented as Linux kernel modules, are currently be...
